Academic Coaching

Individual attention

Each student is assigned a counselor who works with you one-on-one. Academic skill enhancement/development is one of our primary foci with students, but we are also concerned about your whole college experience. We care about grades, financial aid situations, participation in internships and scholarship awards, roommate issues, pursuit of graduate and professional programs, and other issues that may affect progress and achievement in college.  Counselors also serve as a great referral service to other campus resources and people.

At a campus this large, we believe it is important to have an advocate when you are navigating your pathway to success.

Academic Action Plans

During the initial student intake appointment, the counselor will work with you to determine your approach to academics. Together, you will create a personal academic action plan and focus on key areas to help you succeed at the University.

Common topics may include:

  1. Time management and study plans
  2. Determining your learning style and how to study effectively
  3. Note-taking strategies
  4. Test-taking strategies
  5. Resiliency to academic adversity

The Turning Point

Students on academic probation are strongly encouraged to participate in an intensive program designed to assist them in getting off of probation. The program is  called “Turning Point” based on the book, The Turning Point, by Joyce D. Wensheimer. Students meet multiple times during the semester to develop strategies and practice skills to turn their situation around. An emphasis is put upon study skill development and goal setting in relevant areas for the student.
