GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is a national initiative whose mission is to significantly increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP is funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education. By investing in the future of those students who would not otherwise pursue postsecondary education, the Des Moines Public Schools GEAR UP is enabling students prepare for higher education.
In 2006, DMPS received a grant for the graduating class of 2012. The Des Moines GEAR UP aims to help students and families prepare for higher education by providing field trips, advising, and tutoring for students; workshops for parents; and supplies, technology, and professional development for teachers.
Beginning in 2006-2007 academic year, The University of Iowa began a partnership with some of the seventh graders from eight Des Moines middle schools and this partnership continues today. The University provides campus visit opportunities for students and families several times a year. Campus visits are organized around students' career interests, and students are given opportunities to:
- visit with professors in specific academic areas, such as nursing and physics
- experience labs and museums on the University campus,
- receive campus tours,
- eat in residence halls,
- learn about course planning necessary for gaining access to a college or university
- visit with current University students.
