Life Science Summer Program

Life Science Summer Program LogoThe Program
The Life Science Summer Program (LSSP), an intensive two-week summer program for high school students interested in biology, is sponsored by The Center for Diversity & Enrichment.

This program will provide students hands-on laboratory training and classroom instruction covering a wide range of topics in the area of developmental biology.  Health issues and current events will also be incorporated into the curriculum.

Social and Recreational Activities
When the students are not doing class work, they are participating in social and/or other academic activities. In 2006, those activities included a trip to a water park, movies, ice skating, pizza and ice cream social.

Program Dates
The program will run for two weeks, July 11-25, 2009.  Students are expected to devote full time to this program during these two weeks.  In addition, students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of social and recreational activities.  LSSP is a great place for students to meet peers with a similar interest in science.

Eligibility and Admission
You are eligible for the program if you are an entering 9th or 10th grade student and if you are motivated and have shown a high ability in science.

Admission is based on your application and academic performance.  The LSSP staff and cooperating University faculty members make final admission decisions.

Applications are still being accepted.  Applicants will be notified in April if they are accepted.  After notification, students must complete an acceptance packet and return it along with the program fee.

Costs
A $25 program fee will be charged to all program participants.  This fee must be submitted upon acceptance into the program.

Travel
Students are also expected to pay their own travel costs to and from the program.  Financial assistance for travel costs may be available for those students who demonstrate need.  This assistance will be awarded on a case-by-case basis.  Students who fly here will be escorted to and from the airport by the program's Resident Assistants.

Housing and Meals
Students will live on campus in The University of Iowa residence halls.  They will share an air-conditioned room with another program participant.  Students have a full board plan in the newly remodeled cafeteria in Burge Hall.

Schedule and Supervision
Students will be in class or on field trips from 9 AM to approximately 3 PM every weekday.  During this time, they will be supervised by the instructor and teaching assistant.  In the evenings, students will attend mandatory academic activities (such as computer classes, career panels, faculty seminars, astronomy outings, ethic discussions) or mandatory social activities (such as IMAX movies, pottery painting, and ice skating).  During this time, they will be supervised by the two male and two female Resident Assistants.  On weekends, students will be supervised by their Resident Assistants during structured recreational activities (such as going to an amusement park or canoeing). At night students will have a curfew which will be strictly enforced by the Resident Assistants.  The Resident Assistants will transport students to and from social activities and the various field trips. Students will have some unsupervised free time.  During those times when they are not directly supervised, they are required to be with at least two other students in the program and they are required to notify a Resident Assistant as to where they are going and when they will return.
